5 Tips for Planning a Maine Destination Wedding

Tip #5 – Is this a second marriage for either of you?

Bride's and Groom's wedding ringsIf this is an encore wedding, following a divorce or the death of a spouse,
you must present the local municipal clerk with a certified copy of the final divorce decree, or the death certificate. Be sure to keep these papers in your hand luggage with other travel documents. Apart from these, there is very little formality to getting married in Maine. There is no waiting period and no blood test is required; the license is valid for 90 days (not three months). The person performing the ceremony is responsible for returning the marriage license to the town clerk. It is recommended that, at the time of applying for your license, you request the clerk to mail you a copy (once it has been filed after the ceremony) to your home. This carries a small additional charge, but it’s well worth it if you have to present your certificate of marriage for any reason. In the State of Maine, you can be married by an ordained minister; a lawyer, who is a member of the Maine Bar; or a notary public; it is rumored that notaries public perform a greater percentage of ceremonies than any other official, and Maine has many qualified notaries throughout the state.
